Jason York shook off almost a decade of bad luck at Martinsville Speedway Sunday afternoon to capture the Bailey’s 300 NASCAR Late Model Stock race.

 York slipped into the lead on lap 194 of the 200-lap feature when Dennis Setzer and Philip Morris tangled racing for the lead. He held off Setzer on a final restart to claim the victory, the $25,000 first-place check and the traditional grandfather’s clock trophy that Martinsville winners receive.

 “We finished third up here 10 years ago and we haven’t had any luck since then,” said the 33-year-old York, who is from Reidsville, NC. “But we had some great luck today. Dennis and Philip had the best cars today, but I finished in front of them.”

 Setzer, who won this event last year, tagged York’s bumper a couple of times on the final lap, but couldn’t budge him out of the way.

 “He was gonna have to do a little more than that before I was giving him the bottom lane,” said York, whose margin of victory over Setzer was .240 seconds.

Matt McCall of Denver, NC was third, followed by Kelly Kingery of Wirtz, VA, and Butch Hamlet of Bassett, VA.

York started ninth and took his time working his way to the front.

“At halfway I thought we had a good top five car. I didn’t expect this, but I’m happy to get it,” said York.

A rain shower hit the track with about 25 laps to go and the race was red-flagged for almost 45 minutes to get the racing surface dry. It was almost dark when the race restarted and was really dark when the race ended.

“I don’t think we could have gone any further because of the dark. I run a tinted shield and I had to drive the last laps with it up,” said Setzer. “But the track did everything they did to make sure we got this race in and the fans got their money’s worth.”

Racing returns to Martinsville Speedway in three weeks with the TUMS QuikPak 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend.
