Food Drive Serves Up Over 4,000 Meals For Needy In Area
Celebration 2013 attendees helped feed the hungry in Martinsville and Henry County.
Thanks to the generosity of those attending the recent Celebration 2013 at Martinsville Speedway, 4,000 meals will be available for needy families in Martinsville and Henry County.
Celebration 2013 marked the fifth consecutive year that Martinsville Speedway partnered with the United Way of Henry County and Martinsville for the Fuel for Families Food Drive.
Although it rained before the event began, more than 900 pounds of canned goods and non-perishable items and over $500 in cash were donated by fans. Food banks in the Martinsville and Henry County area were the recipients of the proceeds of the food drive.
“We are fortunate to live in a community where so many people believe in giving back,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “Many families will be touched by the generosity of those who attended Celebration 2013.”
According to Tiffani Underwood, executive director of the United Way of Henry County and Martinsville, over 4,000 meals will be available to hungry people in the area because of the donations at Celebration.
“By leveraging the cash donations with organizations like Feeding America, our local food banks can now serve over 4,000 meals to hungry people in our community,” said Underwood. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to partner with Martinsville Speedway on the event and look forward to next year’s event.”
Celebration 2013 was the 15th annual free-to-the-public event featuring live music, children’s rides and fireworks held during the Fourth of July week at Martinsville Speedway. The show is sponsored by contributions from more than 40 area business, local government and civic organizations.
