Storm Doesn't Spoil Celebration At Martinsville Speedway
Clay Campbell took a dunking to help local charities.
A little rain and thunder was not about to put a damper on Celebration 2014 at Martinsville Speedway. The show went on, full speed ahead.
The carnival rides were packed most of the afternoon and evening, and all three bands, Superhold, Domino, and The Cadillac Three, managed to give the crowd a full night of entertainment.
The night wasn’t without weather-related glitches, though. As precautionary measures, the grandstands were evacuated near the end of Domino’s set when lightning flashed on the horizon and the rides were stopped a couple of times.
And, as usual, the highlight of the night for many of the fans in attendance was the spectacular fireworks show that capped the night.
“Considering the threat of bad weather, everything went better than we could have expected,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “The fans understood the weather created a few problems and they went with the flow. It was a great evening for everyone.”
The weather did factor into Campbell’s fund-raising plans at Celebration. He was scheduled to be in a dunking booth from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to raise money for the Fuel for Families food drive. When lightning started flashing, Campbell made the wise decision to abandon the metal dunking booth filled with water.
“We did pretty good for the time we were there and we’ve already got some plans for next year that will raise even more money,” said Campbell.
