In 2005, in an effort to get students to Martinsville Speedway through reading, the Read Your Way to the Race program was started. Now, 10 years and 15,000 students later, the program is still going strong.

Students ranging from pre-k through fifth grade who read 15 books or chapters, depending on their age, in five weeks receive a free ticket to either the Kroger 200 Camping World Truck Series race or the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

“When we started Read Your Way to the Race we had no idea it would grow to be so big,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “To think that it’s been going on for 10 years now is amazing. What’s more amazing though is the number of kids that we see every year at the track, because of their reading.”

More than 14,000 students from school districts in both Virginia and North Carolina have the opportunity to participate in Read Your Way to the Race. Martinsville Speedway’s spring race weekend saw more than 2,000 students at the track, because of program.

“A goal for Martinsville City Schools is to not only create a culture of reading for our students but a love of reading,” Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Angilee Downing said.  “The partnership with Martinsville Speedway in the "Read Your Way to the Race" program creates excitement around reading and promotes reading for fun.

“Not only does it help provide fun and incentives for our students to read, but it also helps them learn how to set a goal and work towards that goal.   Read Your Way to the Race brings reading and student goal setting into an event that is truly fun for the whole family.”

Students who participate in Read Your Way to the Race are not only rewarded with a race ticket, but are also entered into a drawing for the chance to participate in the Kroger 200 race day festivities including pre-race ceremonies, victory lane and a pace car ride.

Classrooms with the highest participation also have the chance to win prizes ranging from leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance before the Kroger 200 or the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 and a pizza party and tour of the speedway.

While the kids do the work, the parents benefit as well. When the child qualifies for the free race ticket, the parent qualifies for a discounted ticket to the same race.

The Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 race weekend is October 30-November 1 and includes the Virginia Lottery Pole Day on October 30, the Kroger 200 Camping World Truck Series race on October 31 and the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 on November 1.

The Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 is the first race in the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
