As a way to show support for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Martinsville Speedway Track President Clay Campbell presented Sheriff Lane Perry with a check for $10,000.

The money will go to help with the cost of training and equipment for public event safety.

“Our fans are our top priority and their safety is the most important thing to us,” Campbell said. “We want to ensure that when they step foot on our property the law enforcement officers here have the top training and equipment they need.”

However, the money is not just for the work the sheriff’s office does at the race track, it will go to help county wide.

“This extends beyond the major event weekends here at Martinsville Speedway, where the number of people on property would rival the population of many small cities throughout the country,” Campbell said. “The Speedway is often used by the sheriff’s office to conduct various types of training to better prepare for actual emergency situations. With all of the infrastructure we have here it makes it ideal for most any type of scenario.

“There’s no question that what the department does here, whether it be an event or whether it be training, the citizens of Henry County can be assured they have officers that are well trained and ready for whatever comes their way.”

Perry said the relationship between the speedway and his department is one that has grown over time.

“We’ve been security for many years and the relationship has grown and it’s come to the point where we are able to train here periodically,” Perry said. “That’s very nice for when you have a large scale event, but it’s also making us better so the citizens and the fans have a better place to enjoy the event.

“It also helps us with other large places in the community and other public events that are on a smaller scale of attendance.”

Racing returns to Martinsville Speedway in October.

The ValleyStar Credit Union 300 is scheduled for October 16. The race is NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious Late Model Stock Car race.

NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series and Sprint Cup Series return October 28-30 for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 race weekend.
