Stefanik Leads Qualifying For Made In America Whelen 300
Mike Stefanik came within an eyelash of the track record Friday night on the way to winning the pole for the Made In America Whelen 300 NASCAR Modified race at Martinsville Speedway.

Stefanik turned in a fast lap of 100.547 mph (18.833 seconds) to capture the pole for Saturday night's Made In America Whelen 300. The Coventry, RI, driver barely missed the track record of 101.014 mph (18.746 seconds), set by Greg Sacks in 1986.

Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, CT, had the second best speed of the night, 99.974 mph while Donnie Lia of Jericho, NY, was third fastest at 99.842 mph. Rounding out the top five qualifiers were Jerry Marquis, fourth, and Eric Beers, fifth.

The top qualifying Southern Modified Tour driver was Tim Brown of Cana, VA, with a speed of 99.19 mph.

Fifty cars attempted to qualify for Saturday night's race, which will start 43 cars. The fastest 20 cars are locked into the 250-lap feature Saturday night. The next eight positions will go to the eight drivers highest in the season-long point standings who don't make the top 20. The final 15 spots will be filled by the top-15 finishers in the 50-lap Chatlee Boats Last Chance Race. Happy hour is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2. The 50-lap Chatlee Boats last chance race is scheduled for 7 p.m. The 250-lap feature will take the green flag at 8:30 p.m.
