Timely Payment Pays Off For One Fan
When Albert Bodnar got a call from Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell recently, he thought it was just another telemarketing pitch.
"I knew the name when I answered the phone," the Nokesville, VA. Race fan said, "but I thought it was something new he was trying to sell me."
Campbell wasn't selling, he was giving. He had a grandfather clock for Bodnar, just like the one's the winners of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Martinsville Speedway receive. Bodnar had been entered in a drawing for those fans who paid their Goody's Cool Orange 500 ticket renewals in full by July 6. And the winner, in this case Bodnar, got a grandfather clock that stands nearly eight-feet tall.
"It really thrilled me to be able to call Albert and give him the news," said Campbell. "He's a longtime Martinsville fan and you could hear the excitement in his voice when I told him he was the winner."
Bodnar became a NASCAR fan "seven or eight years ago" when his son, then 12 years old, introduced him to the sport.
"My son got us into it. He had gotten interested in it on television," said Bodnar, who sits in the Bill France Tower. "I mentioned it at work and someone said I needed to get tickets for Martinsville.
"Well, I did and we came down and it rained on Sunday. I was a NASCAR newbie and didn't have Monday off. On the way back home on Sunday my son said it was the worst day of his life. I told him we'd go back. Well, we did the next spring and it got me hooked."
Bodnar goes to several races a year now at different tracks, but he says "Martinsville is my favorite place to watch a race."
And now he has a constant reminder of his favorite track. "We've already picked out a place for the clock. We've got high ceilings in our living room and it's going there," said Bodnar.
