Go Far Club Hits Martinsville Speedway for Final Practice

Rich Acres Elementary's Go Far Club took to Martinsville Speedway for final practice before their 5k.

Ask most any racer and they will tell you practice is just as important as the race itself, and that’s exactly what Rich Acres Elementary School’s Go Far Club was doing at Martinsville Speedway.

The club, made up of fourth and fifth graders at the school, stopped by the track to get one final run in, before a 5k race in High Point, N.C. on Saturday.

“The Go Far Club was started about 10 years ago in High Point to fight the obesity epidemic that was widespread in the United States, said Rebecca Allen, an instructional coach at the school and a Go Far coach. “We meet twice a week and train the kids to run a 5k at the end of the season and we talk about nutrition and character development.”

Over the past few years, the club has used Martinsville Speedway as the place for the final training session before the big race. Running at the track serves a two-fold purpose.

“We come to the race track because the kids request it every year,” Allen said. “A lot of them have never even been to the speedway, so seeing the speedway is great.

“It’s a good way for them to understand distance and how long three-miles is and how many times the cars go around the track is interesting. We also like to pull in a little science and math while we are here.”

Nicholas, a fifth-grader, at Rich Acres does the Go Far Club for two reasons.

“To have fun and get a good exercise,” he said.

While he said he wouldn’t have any problem doing six laps around the half-mile track, when asked if he could run 500 laps, like the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars do, he knew his limits.

“No,” he laughed.

NASCAR returns to Martinsville Speedway April 1-3, 2016 for the STP 500 race weekend.

The weekend starts on Friday, April 1, with Virginia Lottery Pole Day and the Camping World Truck Series will return on April 2.

The STP 500 is on April 3. The race will mark the first short-track on the schedule and is the first race back on the east coast after the “west-coast” swing.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or online at www.martinsvillespeedway.com.
