Fundraising Complete for Celebration 2017

More than 60 businesses have come together to ensure Celebration 2017 remains free.

More than 60 local businesses and organizations in and around Martinsville and Henry County, including a handful of first-time donators, have come together to raise the more than $100,000 to ensure Celebration 2017, the annual July 3rd Independence Day Celebration at Martinsville Speedway, remains a free event for the community.

Jeb Bassett, who heads the fundraising for Celebration, said it was great to see several new sponsors step up to ensure the event remains free.

“We were scratching our heads a little a couple of weeks ago, but the article in the Martinsville Bulletin just helped push us over the top,” Bassett said. “We had about a dozen new sponsors this year. At the end, it was refreshing, they were contacting me instead of me contacting them.”

In its 19th year, Celebration features free carnival rides, a concert by the Ohio Players and the largest fireworks show in the region.

There will also be a canned food drive, supporting the Grace Network of Martinsville and Henry County. People bringing food can drop it off at tables located at the entrance to the grandstands.

“Celebration 2017 is for the community, by the community,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “The Speedway provides an excellent venue to host the event, but there is no way we could host Celebration without the support of local businesses and people who are willing to donate time, resources and money to make it happen. Then to be able to have our citizens take care of each other through the food drive really makes it the truest of community events.”

Bassett echoed Campbell’s thoughts, when talking about the feeling he gets when he looks around and sees families enjoying time together.

“It’s very rewarding,” he said. “It’s a sense of community. It’s really a sense of community when you see that many local people get together. It’s really become a great tradition.”

The rides will start at 3 p.m. with grandstands opening at 6. The Ohio Players will take the stage at 8 and the fireworks will follow the concert.
